Wine Advocate: Issue 178, August 2008
Although I have not yet had a chance to taste Gunderloch’s 2007 dry estate Riesling – often one of my favorite German Riesling for the price – their 2007 Riesling Kabinett Jean-Baptiste is a highly successful installment of that wine from the classic red soils of Nackenheim and Nierstein, and finished with just a hint of sweetness. Peach, tangerine zest and musk melon in the nose lead to an orange sorbet-like palate with smoky, wet stone and bitter citrus zest inflections. The residual sugar here really supports the fruit, then backs off to permit a finish highly suggestive of minerality.
